Romero Has Lost It

One expects a zombie film directed by the godfather of all zombie flicks to be nothing short of mindblowing. In that respect, George A .Romero's Land of the Dead simply fails to deliver what should have been a masterpiece. 2 decades have gone by since the last of the original triology,...and one would have thought Romero in that time would have brainstormed something more orginal and refreshing that would have further enhanced and stamped his legendary status permanently on this particular sub-genre ....Well what this movie has done is to prove that time has taken its toll, diminishing his creativity and rendering him devoid of ideas ( see also; George Lucas) as far as reinventing the genre is concerned.Yes, the not too subtle political references and social commentaries which characterised his previous movies are still present..though it might be lost on some. But alas, even that cannot lift this above being just a serviceable zombie thriller. It's a pity because, this movie will not make a fan out of a modern day horror fan who might not have heard of George A Romero or seen any of his classic flicks(though any self respecting horror movie fan who has never heard of Romero ought to do himelf and the rest of his community a service and slash himself in the throat) The fact that the 2004 remake of Romero's very own Dawn of the Dead is superior to this just goes to display the extent of the director's fall from grace. Modern day zombie classics such as Dead Alive (Peter Jackson's best movie by a country mile) and 28 Days Later are the current benchmarks of this particular sub-genre,...and it's sad to see that even Romero isn't able to call upon his talent to meet those standards..let alone surpass them. Well, i guess that's enough Romero bashing for the day. Frankly, Land Of the dead isn't the worst movie ever made,..it's just nothing nothing special....and the 'New Paper' muppets who called it a masterpiece have no fuckin clue whatsoever. If you are ever interested in watching a Romero flick at his prime(though i wouldn't blame you for being apprehensive about doing so after reading this..haw haw!),skip this and go and rent , buy, steal or download the original triology which made him a legend. ...something i have yet to do myself !
