I watched Battale Royale yesterday. It's a great film i had heard alot about. But i never got around to actually watching it. Having seen it now, i can declare that it's probabaly up there among my favourite all time Japanese movies like Ringu or Dark Water. Bloody, nihilistic, and laced with a sick twisted sense of humour, this movie is filled with moments that provided me with extreme orgasmic delight. But to be honest, it wasn't an entirely satisfying movie. There would be a need to suspend disbelief and reason concerning certain aspects of the plot (the nature of 'battle royale' may also seem like farce to certain people),..but i suppose that is a minor flaw when compared to the overall entertainment the film offers without resorting to hollywood conventions. Not in the same class as the Korean Old Boy,but it's definitely a worthy film to represent asian cinema.

...and finally,a quote from Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

"Women don't want equal rights. They have more power being oppressed. They need men to be the vast enemy conspiracy.Their whole identity is based on it."

BATMAN BEGINS

I watched this earlier in the day with Vikram and Dhino....

I'm not sure , but i feel a tinge of disappointment with the new Batman flick. Now, don't get me wrong,...it's just a mild one, perhaps a result of it falling a bit below my expectations. Even if it's unfair to compare, this is possibly in my opinion Christopher Nolan's worst movie yet. But that ofcourse doesn't make it a bad film by any means...it's still way better than most of the junk that masquerades as motion pictures in cineplexes.

The main gripe i have with the movie is with the action scenes that are almost as bad as the ones on Daredevil, which is an atrocious movie in all aspects of film making..if you could even describe it as film making. The action scenes suffers from being overy edited and choppy, and its pretty hard to follow anything that's happening on screen. i suppose that has alot to with Nolan's inexperience when it comes to delaing with the action genre. The other problem i have is that the movie lacks a supervillain with enough weight and presence to make any sort of impact that is expected in a superhero flick. As much as i love Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later who plays Scarecrow,..his character pales considerably in comparison to Tim Burton's freaks(Joker, Penquin, Catwoman..) It doesn't help that he does't get much screen time or even much of a background story.

Well, all in all Batman Begins is still a pretty good movie, and one of the best of the year. I have no problem with claims of Christian bale being hailed the best batman ever(though i preferred him in American Psycho). I still have a soft spot for Michael Keaton who i personally feel had an air of mystery about him. But i reckon Bale's Batman sacrifices style(that was taken to ridiculous extremes by Schumacher) for pure hard edged menace. And his batman does a whole lot more justice to how its truly represented in the comic books and graphic novels. Donning the batsuit, he really looks like Frank miller's creation fleshed out onscreen.Anyways, on a final note this is not the best movie of the eyar based on a graphic novel.... Sin City still maintains its position in that rank fas far as i'm concerned...and as far as comparisons with Burton's Batman movies go,...i still prefer Burton's vision for its bold eccentricity and wonderful visuals.

And a bit of Batman Philosophy, though i think its bollocks..haw haw

It's not what's underneath,.. it's what a man does that truly defines him.

Went to the 'Unity Of Agression 2005' gig with Babayaro, and though we left kinda early it wasn't too bad at all. Apparently we missed the better bands that performed later. We actually got a free compilation cd at the door,..so i supose we got our 10 dollar's worth from a rather "Singaporean" perspective of it all ..haw haw! But it must be mentioned that we were almost denied that when the mat at the door tried to rip us off by claiming that the cds had run out.... Well we weren't gonna get fooled...thanks to Babayaro's keen eye...haw haw!..She spotted poeple coming in after with a cd in their hands.. So well, we confronted the mat , and he didnt heistate handing us the cds we rightly deserved..haw haw! i supppse new stock just came in..though Babayaro claimed she spotted a whole bag of cds under the table earlier when we were told it had run out...Oh well..WE GOT OUR CDS..SO IT DOESN"T FUCKIN MATTER!

What was perhaps the highlight of the gig wasn't so much the performances , but the mat boys who did a fantastic job entertaining everyone with their offstage antics(regardless of whether they were aware of it or not), shoving and pulling onto ohe another like starved rabid dogs(i'm sure they would have bitten off each other's heads if they were endowed with canine teeth), during several peformances...haaw haw! I'm not certain if these guys are paid to keep everyone awake by acting like idiots or they simply have grand delusions of being moshers,..alas with rather farcial but admittedly comical application. But to give them lil mats credit,..they certainly enlivened the place when it threatened to become a bit drab..haw haw!...2 thumbs up to mosher mat boys!!

I had my German exam yesterday,..so well for one thing that just means no more German. I'm home now alone(my parents have gone to visit relatives in "Mongolia") and i'm feeling pretty much bored with not much else to do. I've spend the last couple of days watching anime and mostly just chatting with space monkeys on msn. As for the exam,..well i think i'd be screwed under normal circumstances. But hopefully the fact that i manged to somehow pass both my written and oral tests mean would help me scrape through with at least a D..haw haw! The paper wasn't like the most difficult, but i suppose the little matter that i spend just a couple of hours before the exam to study for it would go some way in explaining why i had some... ahem... diffiiculties. Anyways, that's hardly something that concerns me now. Right now, i'm just contemplating how i'm gonna spend the rest of my holidays before my industrial attachment in July. Sigh,...i can't be spending the rest of the holidays simply watching dvds i've leeched from messy haired guy or downloading anime. It doesn't help that both Lost and Desperate housewives have recently come to a season end.

Well, i do have a couple of novels that i bought recently to finsih up on. I'm only like one fifth into Choke( by the author of Fight club), but thus far its been pretty good. It hasn't blown me away like Fight club did, but i suppose that would change as i progress further. I haven't really been in the mood to read in recent times, but i guess i have little choice now when its the only means i have to keep myself occupied, other watching movies and anime ofcourse. ..haw haw!

My leg's on a slow road to recovery, but i'm guessing it will be alright in about another week so i can get my football shoes on and get out there and slide some cunt!... Sounds dramatic..yeah i know...but it's true. I suppose it's a good thing too that my leg's "broken', so i'll have no excuse changing my mind about going to the gig this sunday with Babayaro(It's football sunday you see)... I don't think she'd take too kindly to that as i was warned politely by her..haw haw! Anyways, the chinese physican(the blind one) certainly did a good job twisting the shit out of my leg. That and that horrible tasting medicine have served its purpose so far in healing my knee. It has reaffirmed my belief(whatever that was left of it) that modern medicine isn't always the way to go...yeah right..

Can't wait to watch Batman Begins when it opens next week..err..it's next week right...ahh doen't matter..i'll watch it when it opens. According to some reviews that i've browsed through thus far, this is supposedly the best Batman flick ever to make it to the big screen and Christian Bale is the best batman ever... Yeah well, i wouldn't be too surprised if Christian Bale turns out being the best caped crusader ever,...i mean..that guy was magnificent in American Psycho... And this might just be THE Batman movie considering the director and the cast ... But i'm not too certain if it'll be my favourite. Can anything replace Tim burton's gothic master piece at the top of the pile for me? ...(And by that i refer to Batman Returns...and not the overrated Batman..yes it's good but it's a one man show) Tim burton is by no means a great filmmaker..but few surpass him when it comes to visual splendour. Whether you like his movies or not, they are always terrific to look at. And i'm one of those who loves his movies with the exception of Planet Of The Apes which was an ill advised remake...but atleast that still had Tim Roth..haw haw! Anyways i am not expecting this new Batman flick to be visually on par or superior to Tim Burton's vision,..but i suppose it could be one of far more substance. Oh, and by the way to all those who didn't know , this movie is inspired by Frank miller's Batman:year 1. So together with Sin City, Frank miller has been directly or indirectly responsible for what could be 2 of the best movies of the year which are also 2 of the best movies ever to be inspired by/based on a graphic novel or comic!

Crocked

Back in 2001, i sacrificed my leg for my country( a victim of deadly flesg eating bacteria during my proud tenure in NS)....Years later, yesterday i once again gave up my leg for a different cause. This time it was for football. I was valiantly chasing the ball looking to defend it as the enemy attacked our goal. It was TSY on the ball. I stretched my right leg to get to it. But alas misfortune struck. I felt a sharp pain on my right knee and that was it..i knew it was all over. I must have twisted or sprained my knee..i don't know... but it was goddamn painful. Moments later i had to hobble away like a soldier wounded in the battlefield.

I could hardly move around after that, as i dragged myself home. My dad helped to massage with some ointment. It seemed to help for awhile...but it got worse when i went to bed . I was tossing and turning throughout the night as i struggled to overcome the pain coursing through my leg. In the morning, i visited a Chinese Physican(a blind one at that), and he spend about 15 minutes twisting and pulling the crap out of my leg like i was some kind of lifeless ragdoll. But to give him credit, it did seem to have the desired effect, and now im in much less pain. I am just not certain if its temporary respite.... still a bit apprehensive. i was given some really disgusting herbal medicine...It's been awhile i had medicine which tasted this horrible...euurghh!
