Movies
In the past month, i have caught a few movies which i have yet to mention in my posts. i will thus dedicate this post entirely to commenting on some of these films...starting with..
Kinsey
Watched this a couple of weeks back with the Lord and Vikram at Great World. We weren't planning to watch this originally on that day. We were suppose to catch The Aviator. But after some last minute reconsideration, caused by some less than impressive reviews given by individuals who had already watched The Aviator, we decided watching Kinsey would be the better option. Anyway, we recently manged to download a dvd quality version of The Aviator online, so i'd say it was a good decison to give the movie a miss originally. That's 6 dollars and 50 cents saved. But regardless of that,..Kinsey is a great movie. I don't remember watching much of Liam Neeson in movies. 2 movies that come to my mind are Schindler's List and Dark man. He was great in both of them, though i thought he was overshadowed by my one time favourite Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's list, while Darkman owed much of its success to its comic book visuals and the direction of Sam Raimi. Anyway, Kinsey is unlike any movie i recall ever watchig. It's a biopic of Dr Alfred Kinsey, a biological scientist who becomes fascinated with human sexual behaviour, researching and writing on the subject. Alot of controvesial stuff that the normal viwer might object to or find difficult to stomach. A certain scene in which Liam Neeson engages in making out with his male research student is sure to cause homophobics to faint in their seats. But perhaps the highlight of the movie is a certain peodophile who has had sex with almost everyone and everything(family members, children to animals), who is able to masturbate and ejaculate in a record 10 seconds from a completely flaccid state!
Hotel Rwanda
This is arguably as good or better than Kinsey. We watched this just a few days apart from Kinsey. Though it isn't as provocative, it the movie moves along generating extreme moments of tension. Another of 2004's best movie,..this traces a true story set in 1994, during a civil war which erupted in Rwanda where members of the Tutsis were hunted down and massacred by the Hutu tribe. The story revolveses around a hotel manager, Paul Rusesabagina, played by Don Cheadle,in perhaps his most memorable and serious role yet, who goes through great lengths and means to keep Tutsi refugees including his wife and children safe from the blood thirsty hatred of the Hutus. Hotel Rwanda is no Schindler's list which it shares certain similarities with. Schindler's list is one of the best movie's ever made,..and Steven Spielberg's best. Hotel Rwanda is great in its own right. But it would be ridiculous to compare the merits of both movies. The acting in Hotel Rwanda by Don Cheadle especially raises the film. The movie doesn't depict violence as savagely and cold bloodedly as it is in Schindler's list, though the corpses than line and completely cover the street in one paticular scene is a gripping image whichs serves to remind us of the horrors of genocide.
Old Boy
I just caught this movie on dvd a couple days back. This Korean film was out in the theatres towards the end of the year during the examination period, and i was unable to catch it though i was very keen. It was a movie which was in direct competition with Fahrenheit 911 at the Cannes fim festival , where the judging panel was headed by none other than film maestro Quentin Tarantino. Though Fahrenheit 911 won, Tarantino was adamant Old boy should have taken the prestigous Palm D'or. I admit i was originally attracted to this movie due to its dark noirish looking poster at GV Grand plus the fact that it was being vouched by my favourite film maker. Fast foward to january, and i get my hand on the Old Boy DVD Vikram purchased. The movie's a roller coaster ride from beginning to end, and it would have been impossible to predict the numerous plot twists that take place, which don't seem to be contrived but to serve the purpose of the story. The story is about a man who is imprisoned by unknown captors for 15 years in a room, where all he has is a television that feeds him with information and keeping track of time. He is drugged by gas regularly to keep his senses weak and dormant. He is also framed for the murder of his wife. 15 years later, he is released under mysterious circumstances waking up in a suitcase. Determined to find the person responsible for taking away 15 years of his life and the murder of his wife, he goes on personal crusade to find the person and to discover the reason he was subjected to imprisonment. The story rarely unfolds in a manner the audience would expect when what seems like an ordinary tale of revenge turns out to be something more sinister and twisted. The no holds barred violence, black humour, and pounding soundtrack gives this stylish noir thriller a look and feel not very much unlike a Tarantino movie. This won't be a movie for everyone's liking,..but those who have a penchant for darkly violent movies in the vein of tarantino, laced with caustic wit and mind boggling plot twists will love this gem of a Korean movie, which for the record is the best Korean movie i've ever seen. And no, it isn't the only Korean movie i've seen.
